The EMS Institute Inc. is an American Heart Association Training Center. We have over 60 instructors who can teach an array of courses including initial classes, refresher classes, and skill testing.

BLS: Basic Life Support

The American Heart Association’s BLS Course encompasses the most recent science and educational standards from the 2021 Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC. It includes single-rescuer and team Basic Life Support skills for application in both pre-hospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics.  Upon completion, a student will have knowledge of:
  • The importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival; 
  • All of the steps of the Chain of Survival;
  • The signs of someone needing CPR;
  • The importance of early use of an AED;
  • The importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation.
Additionally, the student will have practiced and demonstrated:
  • Practical application of the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival;
  • Performing high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants;
  • The use of an AED;
  • Providing effective ventilations using a barrier device;
  • The ability to perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR;
  • The technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants.

CPR AED and First Aid

American Heart Association's Heartsaver courses are designed to prepare students to provide first aid, administer CPR, and use an AED in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Heartsaver Instructor-led training is conducted in a classroom setting and features group interaction and hands-on coaching and feedback from an American Heart Association Instructor. Heartsaver blended learning courses include an online portion that can be completed either at work, home, or wherever students have Internet access. Upon successful completion of the online portion, students attend a hands-on skills session with an American Heart Association Instructor.

Heartsaver Pediatric
First Aid CPR AED Course

The Heartsaver pediatric course is designed to meet the regulatory requirements for child care workers in all 50 U.S. states. It teaches child care providers and others to respond to illnesses and injuries in a child or infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. The course covers child/infant CPR, child/infant AED, child/infant choking, and pediatric first aid; a comprehensive subject list is as follows:

ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support

ACLS is an advanced, Instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care, and immediate post-cardiac arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.
  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED;
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest;
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia;
  • Airway management;
  • Related pharmacology;
  • Management of ACS and stroke;
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team.

PALS: 
Pediatric Advanced Life Support  Training

The American Heart Association’s PALS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2021 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC. This classroom, Instructor-led course uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.  
  • High-quality Child CPR and AED, and Infant CPR; 
  • Recognition of patients who do and do not require immediate intervention;
  • Recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest early and application of CPR within 10 seconds;
  • Differentiation between respiratory distress and failure;
  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia;
  • Airway management;
  • Related pharmacology;
  • Management of ACS and stroke;

Bloodborne Pathogens

Picture
This classroom course teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. The Heartsaver BBP Course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and tagline, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act™”, to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training. Students learn to:
  • Protect themselves from blood or blood-containing materials;
  • Act quickly and safely;
  • Clean the area that has blood or blood-containing materials;
  • Tell their supervisor about the incident.
